Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a modern day medical enigma. About 50% of visits to a gastro-enterologist end with the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They are told to ‘increase fibre’ and they will ‘have to live with it’. Fortunately with the latest methods in Natural Medicine IBS can be treated extremely well. As a result it is an ever increasing condition in my clinic. Many patients explain to me their frustration as they have ‘tried everything’ including supplements & FODMAP diets. Common Symptoms of IBS
IBS is a condition referring to the changing abdominal pain with alternating diarrhoea and constipation. It can often be described as disturbed or irregular bowel function.
IBS has recurring pain in abdomen with two or more of the following;
Abdominal bloating
Pain from passing stool
Passing mucus from rectum
Frequent motions in the morning
Altered stool at beginning of pain
‘Never well done or empty’ sensation after passing stool
Often patients will also have other conditions like;
Gastric reflux or Heatburn
Disturbed sleep patterns
Fatigue
Restless leg syndrome
Crawling skin (formication)
Frequent colds, flu, post natal drip

I always look into the entire array of presenting symptoms as the entire person must be treated for excellent results. As you can see, different people with IBS will need a different medicine for treatment as they often present with a unique symptom combination. Many patients are very pleased when they experience not only healing of the IBS, but also improvements in these above listed extra conditions.
Most patients who come for treatment with IBS have tried many other treatments. For eg. Before they come, they are on Probiotics, Vitamin/Mineral supplements and following a very strict diet, & unfortunately still get IBS.
